SUN

By Far the largest astral body Visible to our Eye, It is The Star that illuminates our Solar System. Sun also called as Ravi/ Surya/ Aditya by Hindus, “Ra” by ancient Egyptians, Apollo by Ancient Greek and other different names by others in History of mankind.

Astronomical Facts:

The Sun is the star at the centre of the Solar System. It is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field via a dynamo process. Which is a round - shaped, heavy-elemental star that spreads massive heat around other planets and stars. Sun is a dry, masculine, positive and hot planet in Universe. It is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. It is nearest to earth in January every year when it is 14,71,03,000 kms and farthest in July when its distance from earth is 15,21,06,000 kms. Its diameter is 13,92 000 kms (109.3 times of earth’s diameter), surface area is 6.087 x 1012 square kms. (1,20,000 times of earth’s  surface area), Volume is 1.41 x 1018 cubic kms. (1,306,000 times the earth’s volume) and its mass is about 330,000 times that of Earth, accounting for about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. About three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen (~73%); the rest is mostly helium (~25%), with much smaller quantities of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon, and iron. The Sun takes 365 days travelling approximately 1 degree per day to go round the ecliptic. It’s Stationary and never retrogrades.

Vedic Stories –
In India, Surya is believed to be a benevolent deity capable of healing sick people. Even today, people place the symbol of the Sun over shops because they think it would bring good fortune.
The oldest surviving Vedic hymns, such as the hymn 1.115 of the Rigveda, mention Sūrya with particular reverence for the "rising sun” and its symbolism as dispeller of darkness, one who empowers knowledge, the good and all life.

The Sun and the Earth
The Sun causes day and night on the earth,
Because of revolution,
When there is night here, it is day on the other side,
The sun does not really rise or sink.
—Aitareya Brahmana III.44 (Rigveda)
Surya first appears in Vedic literature in the Rigveda, Composed about 10000 BC. The bringer of the Light, Surya was thought to ride his chariot across the sky and defeat the demons of darkness. Surya is depicted as a red man with three eyes and four arms, riding in a chariot drawn by seven mares. Surya holds water lilies with two of his hands. With his third hand he encourages his worshipers whom he blesses with his fourth hand.

Names that come up for Sun in Hindu Scriptures are Aditya (of Aditi, inspirer), Surya (the supreme guide or light), Ravi (praised by all), Divakara (creator of day) and Hiranyagarbha (having golden womb, the creator). , Bhaanu (the shining one or ray of light), Arka (the radiant), Bhaskara (the illuminator), Mitra (friend of all), Marichi (rays of light, starlight), Sahasrarhsu (having thousand rays), Savita (the purifier), Pushan (the nourisher of all), Khag (stimulator of the senses), Mihira, Prabhakara (creator of shining light), Martanda (sprung from lifeless egg), Chitrabhanu (lord of flames),
The Ādityas are one of the principal deities of the Vedic classical Hinduism belonging to solar class. In the Vedas, numerous hymns are dedicated to Mitra, Varuna, and Savitr etc. Even the Gayatri mantra, which is regarded as one of the most sacred of the Vedic hymns is dedicated to Savitr, one of the principal Ādityas. The Adityas are a group of solar deities, from the Brahmana period numbering twelve. The ritual of Surya Namaskaar, performed by Hindus, is an elaborate set of hand gestures and body movements, designed to greet and revere the Sun.

As per some Hindu Legends, Surya is the son of Kasyapa (a Vedic sage) and Aditi (Infinite Heavens), in others he is the offspring of Dyaus (Sky), and in still others his father is Brahma. Sage Kashyap and his wife Aditi gave birth to Indra, Visnu, Vivasvan, Mitre, Amsuman, Dhata Tvasta, Pusa, Varuna, Aryama, Bhaga and Savita. These twelve sons of Aditi become known as twelve Adityas. Lord Bramha selected Savita from theses twelve Adityas and blessed him by saying only he will be worshiped and all other Adityas will be merged in him. But these twelve Adityas exerts their force separately which gave rise to twelve months and each of them are said to rule over the each of the twelve months. As a result of this, we have different seasons and climatic changes.

Aditya is said to be married to the goddess Ranaadeh, also known as Sanjnya. She is depicted in dual form, being both sunlight and shadow, personified. The goddess is revered in Gujarat and Rajasthan. When Surya married Sanjna, (Conscience), the daughter of Visvakarma The celestial architect these were Vaivasvata (one of the 14 original men or Manu), Yama (god of the dead), and Yami (goddess of the Yamuna river) Sanjana could not bear the intense light and heat. Sanjna became so tired of Surya’s brilliant light that she one day gave him a handmaid, Chaya (Shade), and left him to live a life of reflection in the forests, transformed into a mare. Meanwhile, the Sun being unknown of this fact, continued to live with Chaya and she gave birth to three more children, Savarni, Shani (later became the planet Saturn) and Tapti (later became a river). After passage of some more time Sun realized that Chaya was not his wife and he went to look for her. He saw his wife praying in the form of a mare and he turned himself into a horse and approached her amorously. The resulting offspring were Revanta (chief of the Guhyakas) and two twin sons, the youthful Ashvins, the birth of horse headed twins, Ashwini Kumara, the celestial physicians who travel before his chariot in their own golden version or on horseback. Sanjana told her husband that his light was too strong for her. Sun then decided to divide his light in to sixteen parts, each of which created different planets including Earth, while the Sun was left with one-sixteenth part of his original light and Sanjana came back to live with Sun.

Another legend gives the credit of to Sanjanas Father Vishwakarma, He decided to help her and trimmed Surya's Brillance and aura reducing his brightness by an eighth. Thus, Sanjna could more easily live close to her husband. From these blazing fragments were made various weapons of the gods, including Vishnu’s discus, Shiva’s trident, Kubera’s club, and Karttikeya’s lance.

A powerful race of Hindu kings are supposed to be the direct descendant of Sun god. This dynasty known as Suryavanshi, first king of this dynasty was Iskwakoo and later incarnation of Vishnu, Lord Rama was born in this dynasty. The Mahabharata describes one of its warrior heroes, Karna, as being the son of the Pandava mother Kunti and Surya. Various other offspring sometimes attributed to Surya include the monkey chief Sugriva, Ushas, the personification of Dawn in early texts.

The charioteer of Surya is Aruna, who is also personified as the redness that accompanies the sunlight in dawn and dusk. The sun god is driven by a seven-horsed Chariot depicting the seven days of the week. Seven horses pulling the chariot, known as Gayatri, Brhati, Usnik, Jagati, Tristup, Anustup and Pankti. These seven horses are metaphorically speaking are also the seven colours which the Sunlight consists of and known as 'VIBGYOR'.

Surya is considered the King of the nine Grahas of Vedic Astrology. These are the Surya, Chandra, Buddha, Mangal, Shukra, Guru, and Shani, plus Chaya Grahas (ascending and descending nodes) of Rahu and Ketu, all visible to the naked eye.
In other stories involving Surya, the sun-god gave the White Yajurveda (a collection of mantras) to the sage Yajnavalkya. Ever generous, Surya also gave the magical syamantaka gem to Satrajit, a nobleman known for his devout worship of the god. This stone, if the owner were a good person, could produce a huge quantity of gold on a daily basis and dispelled all fears. If the owner was evil, then it proved their undoing with deadly consequences.

Hanuman and Surya Namaskar

Pawan putra Hanuman or Anjanaye swamy   was born with supernormal powers. As a child he was a voracious eater. One day when his mother was out, he was hungry and looking for food. He looked outside and saw the Sun just rising on the horizon. He mistook it for a ripe mango and wanted to eat it. Using his supernormal powers, he took a big leap and soared to grab the sun. He grabbed the sun and began to put it into his mouth to eat it. As soon as he put the sun in his mouth, the earth began to get engulfed in darkness. The gods in heaven really got worried and requested Hanuman to release the sun. The stubborn child refused. Indra, the Lord of all gods, had to use his weapon, the diamond thunderbolt (Vajra) and threw it at Hanuman. The weapon came and hit Hanuman’s jaw. Out of pain, Hanuman opened his mouth and dropped the sun, thus bringing the universe back to sunlight. But the thrust of the Vajra broke his jaw (hanu), giving him the nickname by which we know him today, “Hanuman, the one with the broken jaw.” The gods, as punishment for Hanuman’s impunity, temporarily took away Hanuman’s powers. Only after they were threatened by Vayu, the wind god, Hanuman’s father, they realized their mistake and gave Hanuman a boon that would give him special powers of strength, speed, shape-transform, a gift for celibacy, a prodigious memory, and the qualities of a true lover of God, all of which would be restored to him in the future when he would meet and serve Lord Rama.
In the meantime, Hanuman, as a Growing child, needed an education. His mother, Anjana, instructed him to approach sun, the perennial teacher, to teach him about all sacred scriptures. Initially, the sun refused Hanuman’s request stating that it is not possible to learn from him as he is constantly on the move. Hanuman insisted and assured the sun that he would keep pace with the sun while getting his education. The sun agreed and imparted all the knowledge of the Vedas and other Shastra’s to Hanuman. In gratitude, Hanuman offered to pay his "guru dakshina" (traditional fee for the teacher) but the sun refused. Hanuman then decided to propitiate his teacher through the practice of Surya Namaskaar which he dedicated to the sun and began practicing it regularly. That is how the practice of Surya Namaskaar was born.

DREKKANA

Drekkana - D3/V3 in Vedic astrology or Decante in western astrology is important Divisional/ Vargas chart. Parashara (BPHS) states that relationship with Siblings is to be judged from the drekkanas occupied by planets. Ancient Scriptures of vedic astrology describe        these Divisional charts. The actual disposition of a planet is properly known from its occupation of these sixteen Vargas.

In Vedic Astrology it is referred as Drekkana /Dreshkana (mostly Drekkana) and is 1/3 of a sign equal to 10 degrees or 1/36th part of zodiac. Drekkana holds an important position in divisional charts. Various ancient and classical texts have mentioned different types of calculating Drekkana /Dreshkana also known as V3 or D3 are as follows:-

Parashara Drekkana: This is the most common Drekkana in Vedic astrology. Dreshkana or D3 without specific reference then it is understood that it this Drekkana. Parashara Drekkana is used to know about and analysing all matters related to co-borns
Jagannath Drekkana: This Drekkana reflects karma of previous life of a person.  D-60 must be analysed along with it.
Somnath Drekkana: Somnath Drekkana is used to know about the sexual drive of a person and describes the attitude of a person towards the sexual matters and his libido. This is generally used in Horary Chart
Privriti-traya Drekkana: This chart is used to see the drives and initiatives that the person apply to achieve his goals. This is generally used in horary analysis

BPHS Ch. 6: Shloka 7-8.Dreshkamsha: "One-third of a Rashi is called Dreshkamsha.

How to calculate Drekkana?
One third equal part of the Sign is called Drekkana. It means there are 3 Drekkana in each sign. There are total 36 Drekkana (12 signs x 3 = 36 Drekkana) in horoscope.

Lord of 1st Drekkana (0º to 10º) within each sign = Sign lord
Lord of 2nd Drekkana (10º to 20º) within each sign= 5th trine
Lord of 3rd Drekkana (20º to 30º) within each sign = 9th trine

36 Dreshkana, counted from Aries, repeating thrice at the rate of 12 per round.

Lordship.

Sage Parashara named three sages as lords of three Drekkana of each sign as follows:-
Movable Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra & Capricorn – Narada, Agastya and Durvaasa
Fixed Signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio & Aquarius – Agastya, Durvaasa and Narada
For Dual Signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius & Pisces- Durvaasa, Narada & Agastya

Significance of Lordship
Narada Muni was known for his ‘Bhakti’ (Devotion) to MahaVishnu. Bhakti is the prime necessity of the soul; therefore Narada might represent the Atma, or the soul. Aghastya Muni is associated with mind in many places in the Vedas. Durvaasa Muni was famous for his efforts to control his senses, therefore he represents the Indriyas, or senses. So we might say that the three Drekkanas of the signs may refer to the soul, the mind and the senses.

Parashara states that the Drekkana Chart should be used to analyse relationship with siblings, or co-borns. We might conclude that the planets in the Drekkanas ruled by Narada would denote the spiritual/karmic relations to the native’s brothers. Those in the Drekkanas ruled by Aghastya would signify the mental/psychological effects from brothers, and those in the Drekkanas ruled by Durvaasa would refer to the sensual/physical comfort or discomfort caused by the brothers and sisters.

GAJ - KESARI YOGA

Gaja-Kesari Yoga is one of the most auspicious yoga in Vedic Hindu astrology. Since two benefices are involved here i.e., Moon & Jupiter, where Moon represents the mind and Jupiter represent divine grace, all astrology classics have given a lot of significance to it.

The GajaKesari is the combination of two Sanskrit words; Gaja and Kesari. The terms ‘Gaja’ means an elephant and the word ‘Kesari’ means lion. So as the name suggests, the yoga gives the native the toughness and vigour like a lion, also majesty and dignity of an elephant. Both are powerful & are the symbol of authority & intelligence/wisdom

From The Scriptures
There is some confusion and contradictions about this yoga in the Scriptures.

Briefly
According to Parashara Hora Shastra,

कॆंद्रे देवगुरौ लग्नाच्चंद्रद्वा शुभदृगयुते
नीचास्तारिगृहैर्हीनॆ यॊगॆयं गजकॆसरि
Gaja Kesari yoga is formed when Jupiter is positioned in a Kendra from the Lagna or from the Moon, and be conjunct or aspected by another benefic and is not debilitated, combust and in inimical sign. The native will be wealthy, intelligent, endowed with virtues, will be a king and splendorous.

According to Jataka Parijata,
कॆंद्रेस्थिते देवगुरौ मृगांकात् योगस्तदाहुर्गजकॆसरीति
दृष्टे सितार्यॆंदु सुतैशशांके नीचास्तहीनैर्गजकॆसरीस्यात्
Gaja Kesari yoga is formed when Jupiter is posited in a Kendra from the Moon. Also, Moon should not be combust and weak and is aspected by the benefic planets Venus and Mercury, not being debilitated the yoga gets strength. The native-born in Gaja Kesari yoga will be energetic, will have much money, and gains, will be meritorious, intelligent and loved by the king.

According to Phala Deepika,
कॆसरीव रिपुवर्गनिहंता प्रौढवाक् सदसि राजसवृत्ति
दीर्घजीव्यतियशापटुर्बुद्धिस्तॆजसा जयति कॆसरि यॊगॆ
Kesari yoga is formed when the Jupiter is in a Kendra position to the Moon. The native will destroy his enemies like a lion. He will address the assembly with wisdom, intellectual and noble way. He will be ambitious, passionate and emotional in his behavior. He will be long-lived, intelligent, well reputed and successful in his endeavors.

According to Jataka Desh Marg,
Gaja Kesari yoga cancels and destroys the negative effects of other yoga’s like thousands of elephants are killed by a lion. The native will be very rich, head of his community or head of the village, city or the country and will be very long lived.

In Simple Terms
Gaja-Kesari Yoga is formed when Jupiter (Guru) is placed in a Kendra position (i.e. 1st. 2nd, 3rd or 4th house) with respect to the Moon (Chandra and is best when Conjunction is between 10degree.

Auspicious Gajkesari Yoga is formed when

  • Jupiter is in Kendra
  • Jupiter not retrograde
  • Not aspected by malefic
Following good results will be felt by the natives due to the formation of Gaja Kesari Yoga in their Horoscope.
  •   Wealthy.                                              Wise Scholar
  •  Courage.                                              Respected by all.
  • A good speaker.                                    Good in debates.
  •    Noble person.                                        Famous
Now
The Moon quickly moves around our Earth in just below 28 days, the time it takes to spend around 2 and a half days in each zodiac sign if we do some rough calculation, we will find that Moon joins Jupiter for round figure of 2 days, the moon will be present in 4th from Jupiter for round figure of 2 days, it will be present on 7th from Jupiter for 2 days and finally again moon will be present on 10th from Jupiter for same period of time. We can see that 1/3rd or 33% of people are born with Gaja Kesari Yoga. Now not everybody is famous or rather Fame is as per the strength of the yoga depending on many factors and it can be restricted to locality, area, city, state, nation etc. as per the strength of the Yog.

Mahatma Gandhi and his Killer Nathuram Godse both had this yoga both were famous in their own way. One has Eternal Fame and name as Father of the nation and another has Notoriety /negative fame as Killer of Father of Nation So it’s understood that other factors influence, Strengthen, Weaken the auspiciousness/inauspiciousness of this Yoga
Key deciding factors
Formation: The result of the Gaja Kesari yoga are practically unique as per placement and no two placement will give the same result. There are many variations in the results. The result depends on the position and strength of the Key planets Jupiter and Moon. Practically this yog can have 48 variations (12 houses * 4 combinations). So the result will be different for all the 48 Permutation and combinations.

The result of Gaja-Kesari Yoga and various interpretations
The result of the Gaja-Kesari yog depends on PAC Factors .the Placement of Moon and Jupiter in a Natal horoscope Good in good Houses and bad in 6,8,12 Houses.

Conjunction and aspect of other planets on these Planets, shadbala and ashtakavarga strengths etc. Jupiter is very strong in Sagittarius, Pisces, and Cancer, Moon is strong in Cancer and Taurus. So obviously when Gaja Kesari yoga is formed in these houses, the result will be very strong.

Aspect or Association with this formation. When benefic planets and friendly planets aspect them, good results will be enhanced and produce very beneficial results. When malefic and enemy planets associate or aspect either of them, the result of the yoga are reduced. Also, the aspect of dusthana lords i.e., 6th, 8th, and 12th lords may modify the result in a negative way.

When Jupiter is conjoint Moon: Moon and Jupiter may conjunct in any of the houses. The results of this yoga depends on in which house it is placed and position from the lagna. It acquires the characteristics of the house it is placed. But general results are that native will be famous, intelligent, and wealthy, will have good health, dignified etc.

The result of the yoga when present in some of the houses in the native's Horoscope:
In Lagna Bhava: Gaja Kesari yoga in Lagna or Tanu bhava can destroy many other negative yoga’s. The native will have good health, body, with a majestic look. He will be dignified and impressive Appearance
Sukha/matru Bhava: The native will have domestic comfort, very learned, possesses land and vehicles, associated with a king, will have a spiritual bent of mind.
Putra Bhava: The native will be very intelligent, well educated, respected by others, will have prosperous children, philosophical, artistic etc.
Kalatra Bhava: The native will be skilled, wealthy, and good in business and partnerships, will have a beautiful spouse, good understanding with the partner etc.
Dharma Sthana: The native will be fortunate, religious, spiritual, contended, will always try to help others, learned, well educated, scholar, a good advisor.
Karma sthana: The native will have high status, wealthy, luck in the profession, financial prosperity, does good karma, help others, respected by all colleagues, his juniors as well as seniors.

The Trikonas or Trines: There are four sets of trines. They are Dharma trikona (1, 5 and 9 houses): makes the person very famous, respected by all
Artha Trikona (2, 6 and 10 houses): it gives positive results in wealth and profession-related matters
Kama trikona (3, 7 and 11 houses): make passionate and gives sensual pleasures
Moksha trikona (4, 8 and 1 houses): it is favorable for spiritual progress

·         In D9 or Navamsha, Moon & Jupiter should not fall in signs which are present in the 6th, 8th & 12th house in the main natal birth chart (D-1). In many cases, it gets abolished if in D/9 chart position of either Jupiter or Moon gets spoiled. It also gets abolished if it gets debilitated in the D/9 chart. Moreover in Navamsha, if Jupiter & Moon are again making Gaja Kesari Yoga then the result will be more effective
·         Moon should be at least 4 house away from Sun.
·       Jupiter or Moon is in Pushkar Bhaga and navamsha then good results of Gaja Kesari will increase significantly
Last but not the least the Functional lordship of Moon & Jupiter is the key deciding factor:  the combination of positive Jupiter with positive Moon may result in the formation of Gaja Kesari Yoga. Apart from the retrograde motion of Jupiter & aspects of malefic, the following factors influence the strength of Gaja Kesari Yoga.
The functional role of planets changes from ascendant to Ascendant & Ascendant changes within two hours, hence on a particular day when Jupiter & Moon are forming Gaja Kesari Yoga, the result of it will change from Native to Native depending upon their Ascendant, in other words, and results will change due to the Functional lordship of Moon & Jupiter. Hence bringing Lagna in it will bring a more dynamic approach to one’s analysis, which is most of the time is not adopted by astrologers while judging Gaja Kesari and any other yoga. The Functional ownership of houses from lagna by both the Jupiter and Moon is very important in determining the Results. Benefic ownership of houses/Bhavas makes the yoga very favorable and malefic ownership of bhavas produce adverse results.

Mesha/Aries lagnaMoon rules over 4th house & Jupiter rules over 9th & 12th house hence Jupiter is a yogakaraka & benefic planet for Aries ascendant. Unafflicted Gaja Kesari Yoga without any counter will give them all good qualities of Gaja Kesari Yoga like Status ,wealth, health, peace, status and a good life for the mother. Controversies

Gaja-kesari yoga comes into being when Jupiter is situated in a kendra (in square-position) from the Moon but according to one school this yoga will arise only when Jupiter and the bright-half Moon are in mutual 10th and 4th position in Pisces, Tauras, .Aquarius and Saggitarius. Yet another text tells us that the Moon and Jupiter in mutual kendras will not give rise to the Gajakesari yoga if either the Moon occupies Scorpio or Mercury  happens to be in the 5th house from the Moon or only if the Moon and Jupiter combine in Cancer or in Capricorn even if Jupiter in the latter sign is combust. In such rare instances, experience alone counts.
